About the Singapore Arrival Card

What Is It?

The Singapore Arrival Card (SGAC) is an electronic document required for travelers entering Singapore. It replaces the traditional paper-based disembarkation/embarkation card and serves as an immigration declaration form. The SGAC must be submitted before arrival to streamline the immigration process.

Note that the SGAC is not a visa; it is a travel declaration required for all visitors, including those who do not need a visa to enter Singapore.

How It Works

The process for submitting the Singapore Arrival Card is simple and must be completed online before arrival:

  1. Complete the Online Form: Provide personal details, travel information, and health declaration.
  2. Submit Before Arrival: The SGAC must be submitted up to 3 days before entering Singapore.
  3. Receive Confirmation: After submission, you will receive an email confirmation. There is no need to print it, as Singapore Immigration officers can verify it electronically.
  4. Present Passport Upon Entry: At immigration, present your passport and follow entry procedures.

Completing the SGAC in advance allows for a quicker and more efficient immigration clearance.

Who Needs to Submit the SGAC?

All travelers entering Singapore, including those who do not require a visa, must submit the Singapore Arrival Card before arrival. This applies to:

  • Tourists
  • Business Travelers
  • Returning Residents and Long-Term Pass Holders
  • Transit Passengers (depending on stay duration)

Airlines may require proof of submission before boarding, so it is best to complete this process early.

A Brief History of Singapore

Singapore’s history is a remarkable story of transformation from a small trading post to a global economic powerhouse. Its early history dates back to the 14th century when it was known as Temasek, a bustling trading settlement. Later, it was renamed Singapura ("Lion City" in Sanskrit), according to local legend.

In 1819, Sir Stamford Raffles of the British East India Company established a trading post in Singapore, recognizing its strategic location along vital maritime routes. Under British colonial rule, Singapore thrived as a free port, attracting immigrants from China, India, and the Malay Archipelago.

During World War II, Singapore fell to Japanese forces in 1942 but was recaptured in 1945 after Japan’s surrender. The post-war years saw a push for independence, leading to Singapore becoming a fully independent republic in 1965. Under Lee Kuan Yew’s leadership, it rapidly developed into a global financial center known for innovation, cleanliness, and economic growth.

Current Leadership

President Tharman Shanmugaratnam was inaugurated as Singapore’s ninth President on September 14, 2023. Before his presidency, Tharman held various senior government positions, including Deputy Prime Minister. He won the 2023 presidential election with a significant majority, reflecting strong public confidence in his leadership.

Alongside Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, Singapore’s leadership focuses on economic resilience, social cohesion, and proactive engagement in international affairs.
